There is nothing I love more than summer nights outdoors but unfortunately so do mosquitoes! I always make sure to have plenty of citronella candles burning so I wanted to give making my own a try.
My favorite part about making my own candles is knowing that they are clean and non-toxic. I simply ordered a 2lb bag of natural soy flakes and organic citronella essential oil.
I used a wooden bowl that I had on hand and decided to add some prettiness by drying some oranges and picking some flowers from around the house.
I sliced the oranges and baked them in the oven at 200° for about 2.5 hours.
In order to figure out how much of the wax flakes I needed I simply filled the bowl with the wax flakes, poured that into a measuring cup and then I then doubled that amount!
Once I had the amount needed I used a heat safe bowl to melt the flakes. I placed the flakes in the bowl and the bowl on top of a pot with boiling water. I made sure to keep stirring until every last flake was completely melted. I also used a silicone spatula to mix.
The next step was to pour the melted wax back into the measuring cup and then add the essential oil of your choice. You’re going to want to use about 30-40 drops of oil. Keep in mind that soy wax doesn’t throw scent so you may need to add more oil depending on the strength you want. Citronella is quite a powerful scent so you should be good!
Using the wicks and holders that come with the wax, hot glue the wicks down, spacing them out and slowly pour in your wax.
Before the wax fully hardens at the top, begin to place your flowers and dried fruit in.
Once it has fully harden you can trim your wicks and begin using your candle!
